2008 Blue Marlin Summer Baseball Camps
The 2008 Blue Marlin summer baseball camps will offer top-notch baseball instructional camps for all ages, levels, positions and abilities. All camps are open to both boys and girls interested in developing and improving their performance and skills. All camps will be held at the baseball complex on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College. Campers will also be able to take advantage of the state-of-the-art indoor hitting facilities located in the Jane P. Batten Student Center.

Blue Marlin Day Camp
- Session I: June 16-20
- Session II: July 28-August 1
This camp is designed to provide beginner, intermediate and advanced baseball instruction for athletes ages 7-18. The main focus will be on developing each player's hitting techniques and giving instruction on proper fielding and throwing techniques. Groups will be formed according to ability and age.
Ages: 7-18
Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Friday
Meals: Campers should bring their own lunches
Equipment to bring: Glove, bat, cleats, baseball pants, coolers
Cost: $250 per camper
(Session I: A non-refundable deposit of $200 must be paid
by June 1 to guarantee a place in the camp. Late registration fee for payments
after June 1 is $275.) Session II: A non-refundable deposit
of $200 must be paid by July 18 to guarantee a place in the camp. Late registration
fee for payments after July 18 is $275. Payments made in full by
May 1 will receive a $25 discount.
Hitting Camp
- Session I: June 23-27
- Session II: July 21-25
This camp is designed to improve the basic fundamentals of the baseball swing. The camp will include mass repetition of swings, drill work (campers receiving instruction on the tees and in the batting cages) and live batting practice with live pitching. (This camp will have limited enrollment.)
Ages: 9-18
Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. daily
Equipment to bring: Bat, batting gloves, glove
Cost: $225 per camper (A non-refundable deposit of $175 must be
paid by June 1 for Session I and June 15 for Session II to guarantee a place in the camp. Late registration fee
for payments after June 1 (Session I) and June 15 (Session II) is $250. Payments made in full by May 1 will receive a $25 discount.
Pitcher& Catcher/Infielder Camp
- July 26-27
The Pitcher/Catcher Camp is for athletes who want to improve their pitching and catching skills. Nick Boothe, head VWC baseball coach, will teach catchers the proper blocking, throwing and receiving techniques as well as catching gamesmanship. These basic catching fundamentals have produced seven All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference catchers at VWC in the past nine years. Mike Loyd, VWC pitching coach, will teach interested pitchers correct grips, spins, fielding and pitching mechanics. Each camper will have the opportunity to throw live pitching from the mound. The camp is designed to improve all aspects of the campers' abilities through the teaching of basic fundamentals and in-depth regiment of drills. (Enrollment for this camp will be limited to 60 players.)
Ages: 12 through high school seniors
Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Meals: Campers should bring their own lunches
Equipment to bring: Glove, bat, cleats, baseball pants, and coolers. Please put your sons name on all item belonging to him.
Cost: $125 per camper (A non-refundable deposit of $100
must be paid by July 1 to guarantee a place in the camp. Late registration
fee for payments after July is $150. Payments made in full by
May 1 will receive a $25 discount.
Father and Son Camp
- August 2-3
This camp is designed to help Dads and sons understand the basic fundamentals of baseball while spending quality time with your child. You will be expected to participate with your child, so please come prepared with both your and your child's baseball gear. You will learn the fundamentals of throwing, catching and hitting and will receive expert advice to improve your skills to be a great parent in the stands. (Enrollment for this session will be limited.)
Ages: 7 to the young at heart!
Time: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday
Meals: Campers should bring their own lunches
Equipment: Glove, bat, cleats, baseball pants, coolers
Cost: $125 per participant (A non-refundable deposit of $200 must
be paid by July 1 to guarantee a place in the camp. Late registration fee
for payments after July 1 is $150. Payments made in full by May
1 will receive a $25 discount.

Nick Boothe, Camp Director

- 22nd season as the very successful head baseball coach at Virginia Wesleyan College
- 24th year as Camp Director of the Blue Marlin Baseball Camps
- Six-time Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Coach of the Year at Virginia Wesleyan, where his teams are consistently ranked among the national top 30
- Guided Virginia Wesleyan to the ODAC championship in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2006
- The 1998 recipient of the prestigious Louisville Slugger Award for Excellence in Coaching
- Consistently leads his team to national rankings in batting average due to his prowess in hitting and catching instruction
Mike Loyd
- Seventh season as a coach at Virginia Wesleyan
- 1995 graduate of VWC with a degree in recreation and leisure
- Former catcher for the Marlins from 1991-95
- Has also served as an assistant women's basketball coach, assistant softball coach and assistant sports information director at VWC
- Came to Virginia Wesleyan from the University of Richmond, where he was an assistant coach for four years
Former and current Virginia Wesleyan baseball players will also serve as members of the camp coaching staff.
