- 1985 graduate of Old Dominion University, with a degree in health and physical education
- Begins 24th season at Virginia Wesleyan College in
2009-10 - Ranked 26th in total victories among the nation's top Division III active coach, and 34th all-time in victories, with an overall record of 537-355-6
- Overall record includes a 241-115-3 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference
- 2006, 2004 Virginia College Division Coach of the Year, as selected by the Virginia Sports Information Directors
- 2006 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year; also won the award in 1993, 1994, 1997, 2000 and 2004; the only coach in ODAC history to receive the award six times; Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1988
- Led VWC to berths in the NCAA South Region tournament in 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004 and 2006
- Has guided VWC to 19 winning seasons in 23 years, including the last 13 in a row, highlighted by a College-record 34 victories in 2003
- Under his guidance, Virginia Wesleyan has produced 53 first-team All-ODAC players since joining the league in 1990 ... the highest number of first-team honorees in the league during that time span
- He has coached four players who have earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and one prestigious Academic All-American in Brent Vuyovich (2005-06)
- 1998 recipient of the Louisville Slugger Award for Excellence in Coaching
- Has coached 22 VWC players who have advanced to the professional baseball ranks, including five signed by Major League teams in the past three seasons
- Former assistant coach at Virginia Commonwealth University
- Three-year baseball letterman at Old Dominion; selected as the team's Most Valuable Player in 1984; earned All-Sun Belt Conference honors in 1984 and 1985; earned Virginia All-State honors in 1985
- Led ODU to the NCAA playoffs his senior season, as he hit .385, with 12 home runs and 78 RBIs
- Not only took on the catcher's duties for ODU, but also played first base and in the outfield; finished with a career batting average of .360, with 26 home runs
- Married to Yolanda "Yogi" Hightower, an ODU graduate and two-time All-American in field hockey, who played in the 1987 Pan Am Games and was an alternate on the 1984 United States Olympic team; they are the parents of three children, Jessica, Tyler and Chase

- Former catcher for the Marlins from 1991-95
- Has also served as an assistant women's basketball coach, assistant softball coach and assistant sports information director at VWC
