Financial report
- The Alumni Association has a sound financial statement, with a cash balance of $6,578.
- The Alumni Legacy Endowed Scholarship fund has a market value of $96,181 with $24,300 in outstanding pledges.
- The Alumni Association lifetime membership quasi-endowment has a cash value of $28,780.
- The 2007-2008 Alumni Board has a goal of 100% participation.
Membership
- In 2006-2007, total Alumni Association membership grew from 313 to 395, an increase of 21% from 2005-2006. Total new members also grew from 186 to 238.
- The Alumni Association has 28 new members from the Class of 2007 (18% more than this time last year). Nine of those members were given gift memberships as a result of a parent solicitation.
- Efforts to increase membership include monthly renewal letters (month before, month during, and month after expiration), personal phone calls, personal hand-written notes to alumni who attend our events, Wesleyan Magazine, the monthly e-newsletter, and membership mailings in August and April.
- We have 66 alumni volunteers with the Alumni Association; these alumni are helping out at events, and are considered as potential Board members.
Alumni Events
- Several men’s basketball game receptions were held between December 2006 and February 2007 for various alumni groups. A special alumni pre-game party was attended by 40 people at the Smokey Pig in Ashland,Va. before the men’s basketball game at Randolph-Macon College on February 10, 2007.
- The first Wesleyan Wednesday to be held in Chesapeake (Wild Wing Café ) was attended by approximately 40 people on March 14.
- 112 people attended the Wesleyan Wednesday Ocean View Fishing Pier event in August (compared to 85 last year at the Pagoda). If it were not the hottest day of the year, this event may have had an even larger attendance (150 people were pre-registered).
- The Alumni Association co-sponsored Homecoming & Family Weekend: “Catch the Spirit!” October 5-7, 2007. The “Party at the Platform” tailgate and the men’s soccer game were attended by approximately 200 alumni and several hundred more parents, students and faculty/staff. It was the largest turnout in memory for a Homecoming tailgate. A 10-year reunion for the Class of 1997 during the tailgate was attended by approximately 50 alumni.
- A 25-year reunion for the Class of 1982 was attended by 40 alumni, spouses and faculty on October 6, 2007. Alumni traveled from as far as Florida, Colorado, California, Indiana and Minnesota.
Student Relations & Recruitment
- The December 2006 Graduate Reception was co-sponsored by the Association – the Board president spoke and representatives from the Association presented senior gifts and served as greeters.
- The “Mad Hatter” Senior/Young Alumni Party was held on May 10, 2007 (during “senior week”) at Jillian’s in downtown Norfolk. The attendance doubled from the previous year.
- The Association co-sponsored Commencement Rehearsal and the Baccalaureate reception.
- Leslie Clements ’07 served the Board as our student liaison. She is now a full-time graduate student at Old Dominion University. Nate Swann ’08 is the 2007-2008 student liaison.
- Members of the Board assisted with Freshman Move-In by serving cold water to students and their families and handed out literature for parents on August 23, 2007.
- The Alumni Association is soliciting alumni volunteers to make phone calls to accepted students and to attend (with admissions office representatives) admitted student receptions and college fairs.
Alumni Association’s 7th Annual Auction & Party
- The 7th Annual Auction & Party was held on April 25, 2007 at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club.
- The Auction & Party raised $18,400 (about even with last year’s event) and four alumni were honored with Distinguished Alumnus and Alumni Service Awards.
- The 8th Annual Auction will be held on April 18, 2008 for the second year at the Cavalier Golf & Yacht Club. This will be the first year the auction has been held on a weekend night.
Board of Trustees Communication
- Association President Dan Mason is serving his second year as a member of the VWC Board of Trustees. Dan is also a Campaign Partner.
- The Annual Report will be mailed to the Board of Trustees in November 2007.
