Jun 24, 2009: Virginia Wesleyan Receives Digital Age Initiative Grant

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Norfolk/Virginia Beach, Va. – Virginia Wesleyan College is one of four schools to receive the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges (VFIC)/Verizon Foundation "Digital Age Initiative" grant of $22,500.

The Digital Age Initiative Grant is designed to help provide incoming freshman from challenged backgrounds with instruction and assistance in developing the computer skills necessary to succeed in their academic career.

"This generous grant will allow the College to augment our existing Student Success Initiative to ensure all students excel during their academic careers," said Virginia Wesleyan President Billy Greer. "Approximately 20 incoming freshman will gain skills and resources to enable them to become more effective in the digital age."

Targeting freshmen who are low income, minority or first generation college students, the College has implemented the "Digital Discovery through the Electronic Portfolio." Selected students will participate in a special section of Virginia Wesleyan's existing PORTfolio Program, a unique four-year program that uses off-campus experiences to help students connect the lessons of the classroom to the world beyond. Students will receive intensive technology training through a three-day pre-session offered prior to the fall 2009 semester and regular programming.

"This grant will allow a group of bright, energetic, and often underserved students the opportunity to prepare for success in our digital age," said Dr. Lawrence D. Hultgren, director of the PORTfolio Program and a professor of philosophy.

The Verizon Foundation is one of the VFIC's most distinguished corporate partners, contributing more than $3.2 million to the VFIC cause over the course of 54 years.

Founded in 1952, the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges is a nonprofit fund-raising partnership supporting the programs and students of 15 leading private colleges in the Commonwealth: Bridgewater College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Hollins University, Lynchburg College, Mary Baldwin College, Marymount University, Randolph College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College, Shenandoah University, Sweet Briar College, University of Richmond, Virginia Wesleyan College, and Washington & Lee University.

The Virginia Wesleyan College Key to the Future Campaign has as its goal to help fund the vision to become a Phi Beta Kappa-caliber college. The Campaign is at $52.6 million on a goal of $65 million, 81% of goal.
