Title IX Coordinator
"No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance."
[Legal Citation: Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and its implementing of regulation at 34 C.F. R. Part 106 (Title IX)]
Virginia Wesleyan College has designated Ms. Joanne Renn, (Coach Renn) Athletic Director, Assistant Men and Women's Tennis coach, and Karla Rasmussen, Director of Human Resources and Marea Hyman, Assistant Director of Student Counseling as the Title IX Coordinators to oversee compliance efforts and investigate any complaint of sex discrimination.
Coach Renn is responsible for monitoring the overall implementation of Title IX for Virginia Wesleyan College and for coordinating compliance with Title IX in all areas covered by the implementing regulations. Her major duties include, but are not limited to, monitoring the following areas:
- Admissions and Recruitment
- Educational Programs and Activities
- Comparable facilities
- Access to course offerings
- Participation in extra-curricular activities
- Financial assistance
- Student employment assistance
- Health services and student insurance
- Marital or parental status
- Athletics & physical education
Virginia Wesleyan College has procedures to provide prompt and equitable resolution of complaints. It is Coach Renn’s responsibility to assist persons alleging sexual harassment or discrimination in filing their grievance(s) and/or oversee the step-by-step procedure(s) to be sure that appropriate time frames are met. To accomplish this, she may work directly with the Director of Human Resources who handles sexual harassment and discrimination cases.
In carrying out this responsibility, Coach Renn works in concert with other college officials including, but not necessarily limited to, the Dean of Students and the Director of Human Resources. If Coach Renn does not conduct the investigation of a complaint, she will receive information about any grievance filed related to Title IX compliance. This procedure allows Virginia Wesleyan to identify any patterns or repeat offenders that may be missed otherwise. Coach Renn also receives sufficient information throughout the process so that she can provide necessary guidance or information to ensure that Virginia Wesleyan carries out its responsibilities under Title IX.
Coach Renn may be reached at Virginia Wesleyan College at 757-455-5723, or email@example.com.
