VIRGINIA WESLEYAN COLLEGE (VWC), a small (1400 students, 92 full-time faculty), growing, selective, and diverse liberal arts institution sited on 300 beautiful wooded acres in the heart of the historical, economically dynamic, and culturally rich Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News metropolitan area, seeks applications for the position of Research Librarian for the Hofheimer Library, with a preferred starting date of July 1, 2014.
Research librarians at VWC support teaching, learning and academic work in all departments at the college. Responsibilities include: assisting library patrons with all transactions; consulting and working with faculty and departments to design instruction, research assistance and materials; developing research workshops for students and faculty; contributing to library-wide planning, goal-setting and assessment efforts; participating in collection development; leading tours; and staffing outreach and orientation events. Some weekend and evening hours are required. Librarians at Virginia Wesleyan College have faculty rank and participate in college governance.
The position requires a Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program, teaching or reference experience, knowledge of information literacy, and demonstrated aptitude and interest in teaching in a college environment. At least 2 years of successful professional experience is preferred, however entry-level librarians are invited to apply. The successful candidate will be energetic, creative and collegial and will demonstrate a team orientation, flexibility, versatility, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively with diverse populations. He/she will demonstrate a user-centered service orientation, finesse in building and sustaining relationships with faculty, students and staff, and strong oral and written communication skills. The ideal candidate will appreciate the caring community and commitment to service embodied by Virginia Wesleyan College.
