VIRGINIA WESLEYAN COLLEGE (VWC), a small (1400 students, 87 full-time faculty), growing, selective, and diverse liberal arts institution sited on 300 beautiful wooded acres in the heart of the historical, economically dynamic, and culturally rich Virginia Beach-Norfolk-Newport News metropolitan area, seeks applications for the position of Learning Center Director, which will begin on or about September 3, 2013. The Director reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Support, and provides vision and leadership for the center’s academic, learning and disability support services, and develops, recommends and actively promotes policies and programs that advance student success and retention. The Director manages a professional staff of three and provides overarching supervision for the effectiveness of all programs and resources that include disability services, tutoring, academic skills development, advising support for freshmen, and placement reporting. With the assistance of a disability specialist, the Director is ultimately responsible for accommodations for students with disabilities, faculty training, and campus-wide consultation and advocacy for compliance with Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act as well as well as ADA regulations. The Director participates in the College’s initiatives for student retention and is a member of the Committee on Academic Standing. The Director collaborates closely with the Writing Center Director, academic deans and faculty on matters of academic support.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of Masters Degree in Higher Education Administration, Developmental Education or a related field. At least three years of experience in a college setting is required, with expertise in learning and academic skills development, academic advising, college curriculum and policy, and all requirements for compliance with ADA and accommodations. Candidates should be committed to best practices and possess excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal and attention-to detail skills.
