Winter Session

Innovative, Intensive and Experiential.

A special three-week January term at Virginia Wesleyan, Winter Session offers unusual academic fare.

Held in the three weeks preceding the Spring Semester, Winter Session provides students with an opportunity to take 1-4 credits from among over 30 course offerings especially designed to take advantage of this concentrated session. Faculty and students can devote their full attention to one course, without the usual distractions of multiple academic and extracurricular commitments.

These courses present subjects both traditional and unusual, always with attention to what can be done better when done intensively. Some courses have extended periods that allow for the viewing of films or for computer lab use. Many of these courses use the undivided focus of the term to connect the classroom to off-campus learning experiences, such as site visits to community businesses and organizations, field trips to museums or dance clubs, or extended travel to places such as Europe, Arizona, or Hawaii.

Because Winter Session is voluntary and involves fewer students, it also provides for an extremely intimate collegiate experience. With small classes that meet for at least three hours each day, students and faculty have a unique opportunity to get to know one another closely. Conversations that begin in the classroom spill into the dining hall or onto the basketball court. As intellects fire, friendships are made.
