Due Dates 2007-2008 Academic Year
Fall 2007 - Nov. 28
Spring 2008 - March 15
Summer 2008 research fellowships - April 5
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis as they are submitted. Applications received after the deadlines may be considered if there is sufficient funding, but it is to your advantage to meet the published deadlines, especially for summer research fellowships.
Application Procedures - 2007-2008
The undergraduate research committee is pleased to accept proposals from students for funding in support of research projects. Proposals can request support for any of the following:
- Student travel to conferences to present research findings (poster or talk).
- Support for current research projects during the spring or fall semesters.
- Travel funds to conduct research off site.
- Summer research fellowships (spring 2008 applications for summer 2008).
- Student travel to attend conferences, but not present research.
The undergraduate research committee will prioritize requests based on the merits of each application. Priority will be given to items 1 through 4 above, but some funding may be available for students attending conference without presenting their findings, especially if this will help prepare them for future research endeavors. Funding for students to attend and present at national or regional conferences will typically be in the range of $500-800, and funding for presentations at local conferences will typically be limited to $250 per student. Research support during the semester will typically be limited to $500, and a limited number of summer research fellowships will available with a maximum of $2500. During summer 2008, it is hoped that at least 2 research fellowships will be available.
Requests for research funding will be accepted at any time, but spring 2008 proposals should be received by Mar. 15th to allow the committee time to review proposals. Applications for the summer research fellowship are due by April 5th.
Proposals must be a maximum of 2 pages typed double spaced (12 point Times New Roman font) with a minimum of a 1 inch margin on all sides. Proposals for funding must be e-mailed to UR@vwc.edu with the subject heading “Undergraduate Research Proposal”. Students should submit requests following discussion with their project advisor, and advisors should provide a concise e-mail (<150 words) indicating their support for the project.
Proposals must include the following:
- Name of the Student
- Project Title
- Student’s phone number and E-mail address
- Faculty Project Advisor
- Course ID and Title (if taken for academic credit)
- Project summary (1 1/2 pages maximum) that concisely describes the project.
- Amount Requested
- What other sources of funding are available to support this project?
- Itemized budget request and a short paragraph justifying the request.
- IF this request is for preliminary work OR attendance at a conference where the student is not presenting, the student MUST justify how this will help prepare them for future research.
It is expected that award recipients will present the results of their work at an upcoming undergraduate research symposium, and their work will be featured on the undergraduate research web page. Students are also expected to consult with a research librarian to ensure full access to necessary literature sources. All requests should seek to keep costs reasonable (i.e., off site hotels at conferences should be considered if there is a considerable cost savings), and funding for meals at conferences will not be considered. It is also expected that students will budget the full amount on all items (i.e., hotel costs for conferences should include tax), and any cost overruns will be the responsibility of the student or the student's separtment, unless specifically cleared by the undergraduate research committee. Requests for summer research fellowships may also include an additional amount of up to $500 for research supplies, if these are integral to the project.
Any questions can be addressed to Dr. Maynard Schaus (mschaus@vwc.edu).
