Recruitment and settlement of Balanus sp. and Crassostrea virginica larvae in the Lafayette River
Abstract
Restoration of the Chesapeake Bay is a very popular theme in states surrounding the Bay, and one of the most well known programs is the shell string survey held in subsequent rivers. This study looks at oyster spat and barnacle larvae settlement and recruitment and the interspecific competition between these two organisms. The highest oyster and barnacle spat peaks were seen in mid August to mid September and the greatest amount of competition was seen in two of the four locations set up in the Lafayette River.
