Abstract

This project will compare and contrast the antinatalist policies of China and India. Both countries identify a link between population and fertility, and have implemented family planning programs. These programs are meant to stabilize fertility rates and improve quality of life. China also claims that controlling population will facilitate more economic, social and political opportunities for women. I will compare and contrast family planning programs in China and India to determine whether such programs actually empower or repress women. My research asks: What are the immediate and long-range effects of these laws on the status of women in China and India?
