BMP Removal Efficiency of Phosphorous and Nitrogen in Stormwater

Abstract

Currently, water pollution from stormwater runoff is a major contributor to the poor water quality across the country in our rivers, streams, bays, and lakes. Best Management Practices, or BMPs, are accepted as the most effective means to reduce the quantity of pollutants from contaminated stormwater. In this study, we examined two types of BMPs. The first was a small-scale model of a filtering tank. This laboratory-based experiment involved examining the effectiveness of an activated carbon filter on removing nitrogen and phosphorus as well as decreasing turbidity in manufactured stormwater. The second type of BMP analyzed was a vegetative swale. Using four different swales on campus behind Blocker Hall, this experiment analyzed each swale’s efficiency in removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and reducing turbidity.
