Translation of Plato

Abstract

I would like to assist Dr. Woods in producing accurate, accessible translations of Plato's dialogues Euthyphro, Crito, The Apology of Socrates, and the death scene from Phaedo. This project is of great importance for several reasons. As a student of philosophy and religious studies, a grasp of the ancient Greek language is essential for a thorough understanding of Greek thought. With the help of Dr. Woods, I have become familiar with the language and in so doing have gained greater insight into Platonic philosophy in general. This project will only help to further edify my proficiency in the language. To be able to work one on one with a professor in generating a new translation of ancient Greek works will also provide me with invaluable work experience in the academic field, and would no doubt help enhance my resume for when I apply to graduate schools. This project will be beneficial for myself, Dr. Woods, and those who would subsequently have free access to a current, accurate, and readable translation of some of the most important works of Plato's.
