Student Research Projects
Identification, Description, and Comparison of the Harvestmen Fauna of Northern Trinidad, La Selva, Costa Rica and El Cope, Panama

|Course||BIO 489: Research in the Natural Sciences|
In Trinidad, I previously conducted a field research project examining the ecology of harvestmen. Specifically, I compared the abundance of harvestmen under palm trees near the beach with that in crappo-cocorite forest (“jungle”). This field study gave me invaluable experience with harvestmen research and sparked an interest to continue research on these animals during summer and fall 2007. I will be using camera lucida to prepare scientific illustrations of harvestmen species from Trinidad. These are needed for the publication of descriptions of three new species from Trinidad. In addition, I will be sorting and identifying specimens from La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica and specimens that Dr. Townsend collected from the remote area of El Cope, Panama during February 2007 (120+ individuals representing at least 29 different taxa).
