Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films: UV-visible Studies of Methylene Blue Loading and Rates of Release

Polyelectrolyte multilayered thin films have also shown significant potential as candidates for sustained and controlled drug delivery systems. However, the feasibility of their applications strongly depends on their permeability and their stability under biologically and/or physically relevant conditions. Understanding the permeability of cross-linked films will provide insight into adjusting the organization and processing parameters for controlling release rates. Hyperbranched PAA/PAH (poly(acrylic acid) / poly(allylamine hydrochloride)) films have been synthesized in a layer-by-layer fashion. We have recently reported how the heat-induced cross-linking of PAA/PAH films affects both MB loading capacity and release rate into solution. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to obtain both quantitative and qualitative data for MB loading, releasing, and structural rearrangements within the films. Furthermore, our studies showed that loading MB into films is a function of the curing temperature.
