Course 19th Century Art History

For my project, I wanted to research how the Industrial Revolution affected the mobility of the middle class in Europe in the 19th century and find traces of its influence within the art of Claude Monet and early photography. During the Industrial Revolution, new technologies compressed time and allowed people to communicate and travel over long distances. These new technologies also enabled the rise of a new class – the Bourgeois. In my research, I tried to discover the attitudes of the Bourgeois towards the Industrial Revolution as they searched for their identity and became more mobile (both geographically and financially). I then tried to discover 19th century artwork and photography that illustrated these attitudes.
