Gender and the Effects of Structural Adjustment Policies

Student Dominique M. Lewis

Course POLS 499

Since the end of the Cold War, structural adjustment policies (SAPs) have often been imposed on countries that seek IMF and World Bank assistance to make their loan payments. Many countries have implemented SAPs with the result of declining living standards and increased financial hardships for many. Much feminist development literature today argues that the negative effects of SAPs are particularly onerous for women. My research explores whether and how structural adjustment policies are gendered.
