The Drum in American Culture

Student Elizabeth Lane
Faculty Mentor(s) Dr. Kathy Jackson
Department Communication

Drums have been one of the chosen musical instruments throughout the history and development of America. Their role as an instrument and as a voice for people in different eras has evolved. Drums have found their place in Native American culture, in the Revollutionary War, during times of slavery, in the development of jazz music and rock and roll, and currently in modern music and as an instrument for therapy
and spirituality. This research project tracks the use and meaning behind the use of the drum during these times.
