Course INST 482: Issues in Education

This study examines whether we are measuring American students’ knowledge and abilities in a manner that demonstrates their abilities to the fullest extent or if we are merely ranking their ability to engage in the lowest levels of thought processes. Since the approval of the No Child Left Behind Act, American schools place so much emphasis on standardized, low-level testing methods that students are not taught to use what they learn. Surveys of teachers and teacher candidates indicate that the multiple choice, standardized tests currently in place barely allow students to demonstrate knowledge and abilities. There are also indications that other assessment approaches would better serve to evaluate America’s students.
