Transient Vs. Cross Registration - What's the Difference?

The main differences between transient and cross registration are money and how the grade/credit is handled. The adviser and the Registrar's Office must approve the course(s) PRIOR to the student's registering at another institution. The student must be in good standing (2.00 or above) to be approved.

Transient registration

This is the only choice for students who wish to take a course outside the Tidewater area but it is also used quite frequently for students taking courses at Tidewater Community College, Old Dominion University, and Norfolk State University. Student's pay the other college's tuition and only the credit is transferred if they make a grade of "C" (2.00) or better. The grade does not affect the GPA at Virginia Wesleyan. Students cannot be within their last 32 hours prior to graduation. The "Application for Approval for a Transient Student" form can be printed from the Registrar's home page. After the student's adviser has approved the course(s) and signed the form, the student must bring it to the Registrar's Office for further approval.

Cross registration

Students who take courses in the Tidewater area (through the Virginia Tidewater Consortium) must choose cross registration if they are within their last 32 hours or if they want the grade to count in their GPA at Virginia Wesleyan. (Whatever grade is made will count in the GPA.) This option can also be used if a student did poorly in a course at VWC and they wish to repeat it to improve their GPA. Students who are approved to cross register pay VWC's tuition rate. Virginia Tidewater Consortium policy stipulates that a student must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.0.
