First-Year Seminar integrates opportunities to develop students’ academic engagement skills with opportunities to connect to the Virginia Wesleyan community. While Tuesday seminars focus on inquiry and critical thinking, Thursday sessions and special events provide opportunities for academic and personal workshops, co-curricular lectures and performances, and social events.
Every student will benefit from engagement in a variety of these activities, but not every student has the very same needs. Hence, rather than require students to participate in one common set of events, the program supports individualized Community Engagement Contracts, requiring certain shared events and then allowing students, in consultation with their instructor, to choose additional events for a total of twelve.
