We have approximately 200 students who take courses in the Education Department each semester. About 50 students participate in student teaching from September to June. In October, 1998, the U.S. Congress amended the Higher Education Act and addressed the issue of accountability for teacher preparation programs. To that end, the federal government requires that colleges share the results of tests each year for those students who have completed the teacher preparation program. The Praxis I test data results are shown below.

Our graduates are hired early by the area's school divisions because of our reputation for preparing excellent teachers. We have a 90% or better hiring rate with many students signing "early commitment contracts" during their final year at Virginia Wesleyan College.
Each prospective teacher is provided with supervised early field experiences and extensive mentoring and supervision. We have a 4 to 1 student teacher to supervisor ratio. The student teaching experience is reflective and builds on teacher competency, confidence and efficacy. We work closely with area school administrators to ensure that our student teachers are placed with the best teachers available. Our students finish our teacher preparation programs knowing that they will make a difference in the classrooms of the twenty-first century. Our expectations are high; together we can be the BEST! Join us in making a difference in the life of a child.
