Community Partnerships

The Role of PORTfolio Community Partners

Virginia Wesleyan will collaborate with organizations across all sectors: public, private, and nonprofit. Likewise, PORTfolio students' interests will range across a variety of fields. Recent career fields of interest among PORTfolio students include arts management, advertizing, criminal justice, education, environmental issues, export/import, international relations, journalism, laboratory research, law, marketing, healthcare, public relations, museums, recreation/leisure, social services, and zoology.

Community partners in these fields will be asked to:

  • Commit to participate in the project for two to four years;
  • Agree to work with a predetermined number of students;
  • Have their representatives speak or teach on campus as part of the project;
  • Provide a range of externship or shadowing experiences across the organization; and
  • Make opportunities available for extended, substantive semester-long internships.

What are the benefits to Students and Partners?

  • Community partners have the chance to help Virginia Wesleyan's most promising students with career choices, serve as mentors, and possibly pre-screen future interns and/or employees.
  • Students gain a realistic perspective of a career field, put their classroom knowledge and skills to work in a professional setting, and network with professionals.
  • Partners help students improve their self-confidence, develop practical skills, enhance their resumes, and become more active citizens in the community.
  • Students help partners research and tackle real-world problems in consultation with the students' PORTfolio faculty advisors.
  • Together, students and partners contribute to community development and renewal, helping to build an important link between higher education and the local communities of Hampton Roads.
