ACADEMIC STUDIES ABROAD (ASA) SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, Academic Studies Abroad (ASA) awards over twenty scholarships for students to use towards semester, summer or year-long ASA study abroad programs. Individual scholarship awards range from $250 to $2,000. Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need by submitting a copy of their financial aid award letter(s). A 1,000-word essay must be submitted with the ASA Scholarship application. Click here for more information or to apply online.

AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR FOREIGN STUDY (AIFS) SCHOLARSHIPS

The American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) annually awards more than $250,000 in scholarships to students who submit application materials demonstrating high academic achievement. Scholarships are available for both summer and semester AIFS programs. Generally, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Click here to learn more about AIFS scholarships or to apply online.

AUSTRALEARN SCHOLARSHIPS

AustraLearn provides numerous scholarships to students applying for a semester or year abroad through the AustraLearn program. Students will be required to fill out a full scholarship application for all AustraLearn specific scholarships by the required deadline to be eligible for consideration of an award. An application will be made available to all eligible participants upon acceptance to the AustraLearn program. All awards are determined by a specific scholarship committee; travel grants (to cover round-trip airfare) and scholarships for programs at specific Australian/New Zealand universities are available. BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Gilman Scholarship Program, sponsored by the US State Department - Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE), lowers barriers to study abroad by providing awards of up to $5,000 to undergraduates demonstrating financial need; students must be Pell Grant eligible at the time of application. Gilman Scholars are now eligible to receive an additional $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000. BOREN SCHOLARSHIPS

National Security Education Program (NSEP)
Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. Maximum scholarship awards are $10,000 for a semester and $20,000 for a full academic year. Click here to learn more about Boren awards for international study or to apply online.

BRIDGING SCHOLARSHIPS

The Association of Teachers of Japanese Bridging Project offers scholarships to American undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for students on semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for students on academic year programs). Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply, and Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Click here for more information on Bridging Scholarships.

CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Sponsored by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC), the Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers intensive summer language institutes overseas in critical need foreign languages. Critical need languages include: Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Turkish and Urdu. CULTURAL EXPERIENCES ABROAD (CEA) SCHOLARSHIPS

CEA gives a first-place award of $3,000 and a second-place award of $2,000 for the following scholarships: Chris Towns France Scholarship, Foreign Language Scholarship, Global Education Scholarship, Academic Excellence Scholarship and CEA Financial Need Grant. Two CEA summer scholarships are also awarded annually -- one for $1,500 and one for $750. Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation and an original essay. DEUTSCHER AKADEMISCHER AUSTAUSCH DIENST (DAAD)

German Academic Exchange Service, Grants and Scholarships
DAAD offers a wide range of opportunities to students, scholars, and higher education institutions of the United States and Canada, from undergraduate students to faculty, for study and research in Germany. About 60 undergraduate grants and scholarships are awarded annually to help offset the cost of study abroad, internships or senior thesis research in Germany. Undergraduate scholarships are open to students in all fields; previous German language experience not required, but advantageous. ENGLISH-SPEAKING UNION SCHOLARSHIPS

British Universities Summer Studies
This program, administered by the English-Speaking Union of the United States in conjunction with the participating British institutions, provides an exceptional opportunity for teachers and rising college seniors to attend summer study programs in either of three locations: the Globe Theater in London, Oxford University and the University of Edinburgh. The Richmond Branch of the ESU works to provide funds sufficient to cover the costs of tuition and transportation. FULBRIGHT INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, the Fulbright is the largest U.S. international exchange program. In 2007, approximately 6,000 grants (totalling over $262 million) were awarded to U.S. students, teachers, professionals, and scholars to study, teach, lecture, and conduct research in more than 155 countries, and to their foreign counterparts to engage in similar activities in the United States. GLOBAL STUDENT EXPERIENCE (GSE) SCHOLARSHIPS

GSE offers five types of Study Abroad Scholarships: Language Development ($500), Business Studies ($1,000), Liberal and Studio Arts ($1,000), General Semester (1,000) and Summer ($250). Applicants must submit an essay of at least 400 words and meet the GPA and other requirements indicated on the application. GSE scholarships are to be used towards certain GSE programs. INTERNATIONAL STUDIES ABROAD (ISA) SCHOLARSHIPS

ISA wards $60,000 in scholarships each year to students who are participating in ISA's study abroad programs. There are two categories: Memorial Scholarships and Diversity Scholarships. The Memorial Scholarship awards are $1,000 for semester study and $750 for summer study. The minimum GPA for Memorial Scholarships is 3.25 and recipients must have completed at least one year of college level foreign language or the equivalent. Diversity Scholarship awards are $2,000 for semester study and $1,000 for summer study. The minimum GPA for Diversity Scholarships is 2.75. For more information or to apply online, click here.

JOHN T. PETTERS FOUNDATION SHOLARSHIPS

The Foundation seeks to increase study abroad opportunities for students who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. This scholarship is open to undergraduate college students in good academic standing pursuing a study abroad program that has a focus on international business. About 30 scholarships are awarded each semester, with the average award being $5,000. Click here to learn more about the scholarships or to apply online.

LAURA W. BUSH TRAVELING FELLOWSHIP

U.S. National Commission for UNESCO
The fellowship will help fund a proposal designed by the applicant to conduct brief work in a foreign country related to the mandate of UNESCO - using education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and/or communication and information to build strong ties among nations. The fellowship is intended for American college students who express an interest in international collaboration but as of yet had not been afforded many opportunities to travel abroad. NATIONAL ITALIAN AMERICAN FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) awards scholarships and grants to outstanding students in the summer for use during the following academic year. The awards will be made on the basis of academic merit and divided between two groups of students: Category I: Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. Area of study: open. Category II: Students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language, Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements. NATIONAL OUTDOOR LEADERSHIP SCHOOL (NOLS) SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) offers over $1,000,000 dollars in scholarship assistance. Scholarship aid is available to applicants who show great potential to excel as NOLS students and who would be unable to attend without financial aid. The typical award ranges between $500 and $2,000; however, full tuition scholarships are awarded occasionally for international and domestic NOLS programs. Students can earn up to 16 credits on summer or semester NOLS programs (college credit is offered through the University of Utah). ROTARY FOUNDATION AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Academic-Year Ambassadorial Scholarships provide a flat grant of US$25,000 for one academic year of study in another country. These awards are intended to help defray costs associated with round-trip transportation, tuition and other fees, room and board, and some educational supplies. Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships help finance either 3 or 6 months of intensive language study and cultural immersion in another country. They provide a flat grant of $12,000 for 3 months and $17,000 for 6 months. Funds are intended to offset costs associated with round-trip transportation, language training, and homestay living arrangements. Some Rotary districts may offer only one type of scholarship, or none at all. Applicants must check with their local club about availability. Student should search for scholarship availability at the Rotary Club in their hometown's district as well as in District 7600, which covers Virginia Wesleyan College.
