Our world is a very big place! The Virginia Wesleyan Office of International and Intercultural Programs (OIP) is your passport to the world! The OIP reference library houses literature from colleges and universities all over the world as places of study. The OIP library is located in the Jane P. Batten Student Center, Suite #22. When you have a couple minutes of free time, stop in and take a look- you have nothing to lose and the world to gain!

EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany)

"Hier las Einstein!" ("Einstein taught here!") Virginia Wesleyan College has a direct exchange program with the Humboldt University in Berlin. We send an advanced student of German there for a semester (or two!), and they send one here to study! Visit Humboldt's Web site, http://www.hu-berlin.de/, to learn more. Universidad Madero (Mexico)

"¡Ven a la UMAD!" ("Come to UMAD!") Puebla is a metropolis of more than one million people and is the commercial center and capital of the state with the same name. Kansai Gaidai University Exchange Program (Japan)

The Virginia Wesleyan and Kansai Gaidai University Exchange Program is a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the Japanese language and culture.  Students who love anime, manga, martial arts or just have a general interest in Japanese or Asian culture will love Kansai Gaidai University.

Kansai Gaidai University is a private, fully-accredited, non-profit institution located in Hirakata City, Osaka. The university has a total enrollment of about 13,000 students, of which approximately 700 are international status. The University has four academic programs and offers a range of courses from business and economics to martial arts and Japanese brush painting (sumi-e).

Study at Kansai Gaidai is open to students of all majors.  Eligible students must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA and have at least junior status.  For more details and application visit http://www.kansaigaidai.ac.jp/asp/.

Scholarships are available from The Japan Student Organization (JASSO). Interested students should check with their advisor and the OIP Director to determine their eligibility.

FACULTY-LED PROGRAMS

Paris and Rome

May 17-May 27, 2010. Travel with Professors Michael Hall and Joyce Howell to experience the art and culture of Paris, France and Rome, Italy —two of the most awesome and historical places in Europe. Ten nights, cost of lodging and transportation approximately $3,400.00 per student. (Credit optional; tuition costs not included). Interested students sign up at the Study Abroad Fair (February 24) or contact either Dr. Hall (mhall@vwc.edu) or Dr. Howell (jbhowell@vwc.edu).

 

Puebla, Mexico

Virginia Wesleyan College and Universidad Madero are pleased to invite you to this summer’s study abroad program, May 27-June 19 in Puebla, Mexico (f. 1531) a city of spectacular historical significance and architectural beauty. The warm hospitality of the “poblanos,” and our active daily schedule of cultural visits in and around the city make this program unique. As guests of Mexican families, students truly experience the many rich manifestations of the Mexican culture while improving individual proficiency in Spanish. This is a three-week academic immersion program that offers 6 credits towards a minor or major in Spanish, or towards the General Education foreign language requirement. Our daily classes at Universidad Madero are complemented by weekend excursions to some of Mexico’s most outstanding archeological and historical sites in Tlaxcala, Oaxaca, Veracruz, and Mexico City for a three day weekend. The program cost for the program is $3,890. The fee includes:Course registration (6 credits), romm and board (three meals per day), Roundtrip airfare and weekend travel to other cities (meals included), daily ground transportation in Puebla and museums and other scheduled cultural activities.

New Zealand

ALL participants must complete an application for the course. These are being developed now.

*  Deadlines for airfare and deposits will be set soon.

*   All participants must have a passport; applications should be sent in as soon as possible.

*   A series of 3 to 4 group meetings will be scheduled to prepare for the course and travel

*   Each student will complete some reading and written responses to maximize the experience

*   Each student will shoot a few equipment tests and composition assignments with their digital cameras  (students who have taken ART 225 will be exempt from this requirement

*  Each student will meet with Sharon Swift individually to go over their camera controls. The purpose is to be sure you know how to operate your cameras. For additional information contact Sharon Swift: sswift@vwc.edu.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT

*  Digital cameras - All participants signing up for the 3 hours of credit will need a digital camera. In fact I am suggesting that you take two in case you should encounter camera repair issues. If your camera is lost, stolen or broken you will not be able to complete the course requirements or receive credit!

*  Batteries, rechargeable suggested with charger and converter

*  Several memory cards –

*  Optional -  photo backup storage device

Costa Rica

BIOLOGY & GEOLOGY OF COSTA RICA-BIOL 250: Field Experiences in Biology, EES 250: Field Experiences in Earth and Environmental Sciences:These courses features a 8-10 day study abroad experience that is open to all VWC students (no prerequisites). The primary emphasis will be on field studies of the biology (flora and fauna) and geology of Costa Rica. These courses will be co-instructed by Drs. Haley and Townsend. Potential field sites include: Arenal Volcano Beaches of the Peninsula de Nicoya Santa Rosa National Park Rainforests of the La Selva Field Station. Tentative activities: Rainforests hikes (day and night), Tide pools, mangroves, and beach studies, Bird watching, Whitewater Rafting & more!The travel fees will be approximately $ 2,100.00 and  will cover airfare, food, lodging, ground transportation,  park and guide fees, and  the departure tax.  Limit: 12 students maximum.  Interested students are strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Haley (Blocker 6; jchaley@vwc.edu) or Dr. Townsend (Blocker 206; vtownsend@vwc.edu)  for further information. The first deposit of $ 750.00  (airfare) will be due September 1st and is non-refundable.  Second deposit of $ 750.00 (lodging  and  tour fees and reservations) is due October 15th .  The final deposit of $ 600 is due December 1st. Your first deposit reserves your spot on a first come – first served basis.

 

AFFILIATE PROGRAMS

Affiliate programs offer discounts, scholarships and further incentives for VWC students to study abroad. Individual programs must still be approved by the Office of International and Intercultural Programs. Program approval is based on individual program cost, student GPA, student maturity/faculty recommendations and other factors.
