Religious Freedom and National Security

January 28, February 7, February 9, February 18, March 30, and April 6

What is the impact of national security policy on religious freedom in America? This question forms the point of departure for this semester-long interdisciplinary symposium.

Civil liberties are often curtailed in times of national crisis. There is a tendency for people to become more fearful and less tolerant, and a parallel tendency for civil liberties to be treated as commodities that can be bargained away or simply deemed expendable. Religious liberty and tolerance are often among the casualties.

Since September 11, these tendencies have been apparent in the political and social situation in the United States. These programs will explore their implications for religious freedom from a variety of perspectives, including historical, legal, social, political and religious.
