Religious Freedom in Context

Religious freedom is not just an abstraction.  It operates in the real world, affecting the structures of our political institutions and the lives of ordinary people.  If we truly want to understand religious freedom today, we must be aware of its larger context.  This context includes historical, legal, political, social, and religious elements.  These create the theoretical framework, institutional safeguards, and political and social space that allow religious freedom to flourish.
