The Center's educational mission is grounded in Virginia Wesleyan's identity as a liberal a
rts college. The study of religious freedom crosses traditional academic boundaries, encompassing history, law, philosophy, political science, sociology, religious studies, and theology. Faculty members from across the college's academic divisions contribute to the Center's work by teaching Center-affiliated courses and participating in other Center programs.
Each year, the Center sponsors several educational events that reach beyond
the campus community and invite the larger public into our ongoing exploration
of religious freedom. These events are highly varied. Interfaith
panel discussions, lectures by renowned scholars, semester-long symposia
on particular issues, presentations on sacred music, plays and films --
these are among the many types of programs regularly offered by the Center. Many
of these are arranged in partnership with local organizations or faith communities.
Students benefit from Center educational programs in many ways. Center-affiliated courses affirm the value of diverse perspectives and methodologies in understanding complex issues. The Center’s public educational events offer additional opportunities for student enrichment. Students involved in service learning programs or in organizations such as Campus Kaleidoscope may work with the Center on specific projects.
