“1961” Alumni Community Service Registry Launch—Our alumni continue to give back. The project goal is to document 1,961 alumni who continue to serve their communities. Fall Convocation, 50th Anniversary Kick-Off
Featuring Carine McCandless, Speaker
Formal opening of the 2011-12 academic year and the College’s first official on-campus 50th anniversary celebration at 11 a.m. in the Jane P. Batten Convocation Center. Convocation speaker Carine McCandless will address faculty, staff, and students. Ms. McCandless is the sister of Christopher McCandless, the main character in the book Into the Wild, a 1996 non-fiction book written by Jon Krakauer. Into the Wild was the freshmen reading selection for the Class of 2015.

Center for the Study of Religious Freedom Fall Symposium Opening
This year’s symposium, titled “Religion in the Public Schools: Possibilities, Pitfalls and Practices,” will focus on two important cases from 50 years ago (1962 & 1963) that barred school-sponsored prayer and Bible readings in public schools and set the stage for controversy that continues today. The opening lecture will take place on October 5 at 7:30 p.m. in Monumental Chapel. The series continues through November 17. Pump Boys and Dinettes is a down-home, feel-good musical set in a gas station . and diner on Highway 57 somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna. Songs include “Farmer Tan,” “Fisherman’s Prayer,” “Mamaw,” and “Drinkin’ Shoes.”

New York Times columnist and author David Brooks is described as a keen observer on the American way of life and a penetrating analyst of present day politics and foreign affairs. This event honors the 50th Anniversary of Virginia Wesleyan College, the Women of Wesleyan and female faculty, staff, and students who were instrumental in the college's success. A photographic exhibit and personal reflections will chronicle the contributions of women to the founding and success of Virginia Wesleyan College. The exhibit in Hofheimer library will include a reception and the opportunity to meet some of the women who were key contributors in the college's early years.
